Why Change Your Vacuum Filter? And, How?

Why Change Your Vacuum Filter? And, How?

Vacuums often get used and abused; overlooked by their owners and not kept up so they perform to the best of their ability.  Here at BISSELL we get a lot of questions about why a vacuum might not be suctioning like it used to or why it stinks when turned on.  One very important thing a vacuum owner can and should do is pay attention to your vacuum filter.  Most people don’t realize the importance of cleaning and replacing their vacuum filters.  But your vacuum is just like any other appliance in your home, it requires maintenance.  If the filter isn’t clean, it can impact the performance of the vacuum.  Dirty vacuum filters can restrict airflow so the suction won’t be as strong.  So, what are some steps you can take to extend the life on your filter?

First, make sure you unplug your vacuum before doing anything! Then, check your vacuum’s user guide. If you have a paper vacuum filter, it can most likely be shaken out between replacements but it’s not possible to clean it. You just have to replace it according to the manufacturer recommendations.  If you have a foam vacuum filter, it can be washed a few times before needing to be replaced.

You might be wondering how to clean a vacuum filter? Foam vacuum filters that can be washed should be gently cleaned by hand with warm water and a drop or two of mild detergent. Make sure the vacuum filter is completely dry before being put back in to the vacuum for use.  If a vacuum filter is even a little damp, mold and mildew can grow and your vacuum will stink when you use it next.

So where is your vacuum filter? Vacuum filters can be found in several places, depending on the model. The best places to look are above the dirt cup and below the dirt cup, and there may be another on the back of the machine. Something else to keep in mind is that some vacuum filters can come with scents, if desired, to freshen and eliminate odors while you clean. What could be better?

Just remember that your vacuum, like your car, your furnace, and many other appliances in your home, requires maintenance to perform at its best.  Replacing vacuum filters a few times a year is important for your machine.
